90% Silver Mercury Dimes ($5 FV, Circulated)

(8 customer reviews)

$117

Adolph A. Weinman was one of a few artists whose designs passed competitions and approval by the Treasury Department and United States Mint. Not only did his Walking Liberty design become the face of the half-dollar coin, but his Winged Liberty became the face of the nation’s 10-cent piece as well.

Your purchase of this product today includes a total of 50 US Mercury Dimes from the circulation period of 1916 to 1945. The coins arrive in a protective plastic with a total face value of $5 (USD) backed by the US government.

On the obverse of all coins is the image of a young Liberty with a winged cap on her head. The design from Weinman so closely mirrored that of the Roman messenger god Mercury, that Americans took to calling the coin the Mercury Dime, even though the design was technically known as the Winged Liberty depiction.

The reverse of all coins features the image of a Roman fasces wrapped in the olive branches of peace. This too was designed by Weinman during the competition to create new coinage depictions for US coins. Weinman’s Mercury Dime design replaced the long-running Barber Coinage of the US Mint, which had been created by US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber.

All US Mercury Dimes available in this product listing were originally struck by either the Denver Mint, San Francisco, or Philadelphia Mint.
