2009 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin

The Royal Canadian Mint first minted the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin in 1979 and has issued it annually since that time. Initially minted in only the 1 oz denomination, the Gold Maple Leaf is considered legal tender, with the 1 oz coin having a face value of $50 Canadian Dollars. In 1982, and in various subsequent years, fractional denominations were minted as well. The 2009 Gold Maple Leaf is available additionally in the following denominations – 1/20 oz ($1), 1/10 oz ($5), 1/4 oz ($10), and 1/2 oz ($20). Due to the consistency of its design and mintage, the Gold Maple Leafs are regarded as the standard by which other 24-karat gold bullion coins are judged.

The reverse of the 2009 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf features the beloved sugar Maple Leaf design. Walter Ott created this design in 1979 for the Royal Canadian Mint, and it has remained basically unchanged, as the design for all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins. The Maple Leaf is a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians.
